Lauren, our new Receptionist Gives us an Insite into her Life

Born and raised in Launceston, Tasmania. Launceston is a small city, on a little island off the south coast of Australia. NOT to be confused with New Zealand!! As a Tasmanian, I enjoyed the small city life and family vacations on regular basis.

At the start of my twenties I moved to Queensland in search of bigger and better things. Hotter weather and being young meant that I stopped on the gold coast for 18 months before going a further hour north to Brisbane. This is where I was introduced into the dental industry and completed my full qualification as a dental nurse.

I moved to the UK in March 2011, for the purpose of travelling Europe and London has become my home base. I joined the Whitehouse Dental Clinic in June 2011 as a receptionist. After 7 months I am slowly but surely remembering names and faces of our long term clients and enjoy warmly welcoming new comers to our fantastic practice.

I have just recently returned from a weekend trip in Iceland to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. I was lucky enough to see this spectacular sight, as well as an amazing half frozen waterfall and a geysir!! Next destinations are Austria and Egypt!

You will see me here until March 2013 before I off on my most epic adventure yet. Africa, India, Europe, Scandinavia and Russia!!!!

Dental Did You Know: The Price of John Lennon’s Tooth.

Apparently, John Lennon’s molar was sold for about $31000 at the Omega Auction House on November 4th. It went for double its listed price and was originally given by him to his former housekeeper. It is also reported to be now in the possession of a Canadian dentist (not confirmed and not me :)

Happy New Year

Happy New Year! Some Dental Resolutions for the New Year!

Happy New Year to everyone! May it be happy, healthy and prosperous!

Just wanted to give some dental resolutions that could be implemented with a little effort to ensure a great smile for the New Year:

  1. Brush 2 minutes twice a day…yes, I said 2 minutes (not 1 minute or 30 seconds or once a day). It really does take that long to clean the majority of surfaces your mouth decently.
  2. Floss…yes, I know you tend to do it before dental appointments. However, 40% of your teeth are not being cleaned if you don’t do it and a substantial percentage of cavities start in those areas
  3. Clean your tongue. I would say 95% of patients don’t do this. A couple of quick swipes on the tongue is usually enough.
  4. Reduce your intake of candies/sweets: it will reduce the incidence of cavities, improve your blood sugar and weight.
  5. Drink more water. In moderation, this a great thing, especially after staining drinks like coffee, tea and wine. Want to reduce all that coffee/tea stain between hygiene appointments? Take a sip or two of water after you finish your drink.
  6. Regular maintenance appointments. Seeing your Doc/Hygienist for a checkup and scaling is truly the dental version of the oil change. Prevention is always the best option.
  7. Get things fixed while they are small (don’t procrastinate). Dentistry seemingly operates on an exponential cost scale as things get more involved and complex. Getting a restoration that costs a couple of hundred dollars (and is usually covered by insurance) is much better for you and your pocketbook than letting it turn into a multi-thousand dollar root canal/core/crown or implant

Do teeth define tour personality??

Saw this infographic from Carrington College’s Dental Assisting Program in California. I’m not sure I agree with the personality aspects of this graphic, but it’s interesting to note what is out there in terms of information.

Dr Kostas in San Francisco

Kostas attended in November a week’s hands-on training programme on dental and implant aesthetics in San Francisco. This was a follow up course to the one he attended in 2009 in the same institution, the Interdisciplinary Dental Education Academy. He is currently planning more continuing education in Geneva and Chicago in the next few months but more importantly his wedding having set a date for May 2012 in Istanbul,Turkey.

From Jason’s Desk

As I am writing, I can see the first leaves of Autumn falling. It seems that yet another year is drawing in.

Sheryl has gone on a  years maternity leave and had her second baby on 14th October; another girl Caitlynn Brynie (hopefully Ill have some pictures for the next  newsletter). Lauren has joined us at the front desk to replace her. Also, Hayley has gone back to New Zealand to study Hygiene and Melissa has joined us at the front desk and will take over her role.

We are delighted to welcome Sophie as  Kostas’s new nurse,  who is here from New Zealand for a couple of years. I will get the girls to write their bios over the next couple of months.

Also, many congratulations to Kostas, who has just got engaged!!

This month, I am going to explain a little bit about mini implants as I think this new technique from the USA is amazing. We can do a lot of traditional implant techniques (but not all), in 1 day, with no surgery and at half the price!!!- see below

Also, there is a very interesting piece on brushing your teeth with Bicarb. This is forming the basis of some impressive research coming from a gum specialist friend of mine at USC in California.

Best

Jason

Dangers of Using Denture Fixative

High Levels of Zinc Are Linked to Many Serious Neurological Injuries.

An estimated 35 million Americans wear dentures.   Many use denture fixativess like Fixodent or PoliGrip to help ill fitting dentures and partial dentures stay in place.   These creams contain high levels of Zinc and have been positively linked to serious and often debilitating permanent neurologic injuries.   Common symptoms of zinc poisoning include:   paralysis, numbness, tingling of hands or feet, muscle weakness of arms or legs, loss of sensation or balance, unexpected pain or weakness, difficulty walking or gait changes, wheelchair confinement.

If you or someone you know has been suffering from any of these symptoms and has been using denture adhesives it is recommended you seek medical attention to be evaluated for zinc poisoning.

Excessive zinc can purge the body of copper, a chemical needed for normal brain and nervous system functioning.  A copper deficiency can cause anemia, weakness and numbness in arms and legs, loss of balance, difficulty in walking and eventually permanent paralysis.

Improper fitting dentures are the reason people use denture adhesives.  Conventional dentures made today are very similar to the dentures George Washington wore.  The materials used are different, but the design has not changed much.  The outdated methods of making a conventional denture are the reason for uncomfortable and poor fitting dentures.

Mini implants offer additional stabilization of upper or lower dentures.  Mini implants used with dentures cost far less than traditional implants used in restoring natural teeth.  Mini Implant companies advise patients to seek care with an mini implant certified dentist.  Mini implants placed by uncertified doctors are more prone to failures.   A secure fit allows denture wearers to eat healthy foods, improving their overall health. Socrates said “Let your food be your medicine and medicine be your food”.   Eat anywhere, with anyone, most anything! Dr Burns is certified in the use of Mini Implants.

Secure fitting dentures allows patients confidence is social settings.  No more dentures falling out when they sneeze, cough, sing or laugh.
